Guilford County Teacher Information

HELPING YOUR STUDENTS IDENTIFY THEIR CORRECT POLLING PLACES AND PRECINCTS

An important step in the electoral process is understanding and identifying one’s districts for the various elections being held as well as one’s precinct and polling placeDepending upon the age of the students, teachers can encourage students to locate this information sot they will know what candidates will be on the ballot in their precinct.  To assist students in obtaining this information, teachers can consider duplicating the letter and distributing it as a homework assignment – preferably in late September/first week of October.  This will promote parent/child dialogue regarding the electoral process and at the same time make the adults aware of their own options for registering to vote if they haven’t already done so.

The information about the following categories can be located on a parent/guardian’s voter registration card.  Also, before 5:00 pm Monday – Friday, the Guilford County Elections Office (641-3836 or 845-7895) can tell someone their precinct and polling place if they know the person’s street, street number, and city/town.

District – determines exactly whom students will be voting for and what part of ballot they will use (This year Guilford County voters will be in separate districts for the following elections:  US House of Representatives, NC Senate, NC State House of Representatives, Guilford County Commissioners, and Guilford County Board of Elections.

City/Town Council Districts (in their municipality) – for local, city or town municipal elections - determine exactly who student will be voting for and what part of the ballot they will use for city/town government elections (even years in High Point and odd years in the other municipalities in the county).

Wards - only for students who live in the municipality of High Point - term means "city council district"

Precincts - voting areas within the county;  we have 159 precincts in Guilford County; all will be open for student voting in November except Friends Home.

Polling place – the physical location in a precinct where students will go to vote (church, school, community building, etc.)

Note:  The Elections Office has printed separate maps of the county that show the districts for the US House, NC Senate and House, and county offices.  The Director of Elections has agreed to furnish these to teachers at no charge.  If you would like a copy of any of these, you may contact the Guilford County Elections Office (641-3836 – Greensboro; 845-7895 High Point) and identify yourself as a Guilford County teacher.

Poll hours are 6:30am to 7:30pm on Tuesday, November 4 for students and adults.  Students may also vote early at any of the adult early voting sites which will be set up "self serve" for students (will have written instructions).  Click here to find early sites.  Students may also apply for an absentee ballot.

“I enjoy working with Kids Voting because of the enthusiasm and commitment I feel both from the adult volunteers and the students participating. It is truly inspiring to see over a thousand volunteers, in Guilford County alone, working to provide a voting experience for our students?”

- Anne Sheffield, Teacher, Board Member

“Kids Voting provides me with an excellent platform to teach students the importance of voting. The out-of-school support such as organizing and manning the Kids Voting booths on Election Day is a great tool for educating middle schoolers about voting. The Kids Voting Program is often seen as an October through Election Day activity, but I use the materials throughout the year.”

- David Roberts, Teacher

“Kid's Voting creates the perfect plan for me to impact my students' knowledge of their individual voice in our democratic government. Kids Voting is a red, white and blue opportunity for teachers to develop strong citizens and to become better informed instructors.”

- Brenda Lenna, Teacher
