HELPING
YOUR STUDENTS IDENTIFY THEIR CORRECT POLLING PLACES AND
PRECINCTS
An important step in the electoral process
is understanding and identifying one’s districts for the various
elections being held as well as one’s precinct and polling
place. Depending upon the age of the students, teachers can
encourage students to locate this information sot they will know
what candidates will be on the ballot in their precinct. To
assist students in obtaining this information, teachers can
consider duplicating the letter and distributing it as a
homework assignment – preferably in late September/first week of
October. This will promote parent/child dialogue regarding the
electoral process and at the same time make the adults aware of
their own options for registering to vote if they haven’t
already done so.
The information about the following
categories can be located on a parent/guardian’s voter
registration card. The information is also available on the
Guilford
County Elections Office website. Also, before 5:00 pm
Monday – Friday, the Guilford County Elections Office (641-3836
or 845-7895) can tell someone their precinct and polling place
if they know the person’s street, street number, and city/town.
District
– determines exactly whom students will be voting for and
what part of ballot they will use (This year Guilford County
voters will be in separate districts for the following
elections: US House of Representatives, NC Senate, NC State
House of Representatives, Guilford County Commissioners, and
Guilford County Board of Elections.
City/Town
Council Districts (in their municipality) – for local, city
or town municipal elections – determine exactly who student
will be voting for and what part of the ballot they will use
for city/town government elections (even years in High Point
and odd years in the other municipalities in the county).
Wards
– only for students who live in the municipality of High
Point – term means “city council district.”
Precincts
- voting areas within the county; we have 164 precincts in
Guilford County.
Polling place – the physical location in a precinct where
students will go to vote (church, school, community
building, etc.)
Note: The Elections Office has printed
separate maps of the county that show the districts for the US
House, NC Senate and House, and county offices. The Director of
Elections has agreed to furnish these to teachers at no charge.
If you would like a copy of any of these, you may contact the
Guilford County Elections Office (641-3836 – Greensboro;
845-7895 High Point) and identify yourself as a Guilford County
teacher.
Poll hours are from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
on Election Day for students and adults. Should the public
schools be in session on Election Day, the Kids Voting polls
will have reduced hours when they are staffed, though students
may still vote at these areas “self serve.” Students may also
vote at any of the adult early voting sites except the High
Point Elections Office.
Click here to find early sites. Students may also apply for
an absentee ballot.
