STUDENT REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

Registration is an important part of the election process, as it teaches students that this is a necessary procedure to be eligible to vote.  You can find the registration activity in the grade appropriate Classroom Activities section.

Schools may choose to handle student voter registration in many different ways, such as in the classroom, as a special school-wide activity, as a special event including parents/guardians, etc.  Each school should have a uniform procedure to avoid confusion and to ensure that all students register.

If any students at your school will be 18 by the day after the next November general election, they should register on an official Board of Elections form (click here to find out where adults can register).  If you decide to hold a special registration that also involved adults, call the Elections Office – 641-3836 (G) or 845-7895 (HP) – of the KIDS VOTING office 373-8773 for information about adult voter registration.

Teachers should collect the registration forms and hold them until the day before Election Day.  On that date (the Monday before Election Day), the forms should be given to the students who will take them to the polls on Election Day.

At the polling place if the student has remembered the form, volunteers will stamp or initial the registration form upon presentation if requested.  This or the “I Voted” sticker verifies that the student has voted and helps to avoid students voting early and often.  No students will be turned away from the polls, regardless of whether they have their voter registration form, whether their parents/guardians are registered to vote, or whether their parents/guardians are citizens.

Students unable to go to the polls may apply to receive absentee ballots.

“I enjoy working with Kids Voting because of the enthusiasm and commitment I feel both from the adult volunteers and the students participating. It is truly inspiring to see over a thousand volunteers, in Guilford County alone, working to provide a voting experience for our students?”

- Anne Sheffield, Teacher, Board Member

“Kids Voting provides me with an excellent platform to teach students the importance of voting. The out-of-school support such as organizing and manning the Kids Voting booths on Election Day is a great tool for educating middle schoolers about voting. The Kids Voting Program is often seen as an October through Election Day activity, but I use the materials throughout the year.”

- David Roberts, Teacher

“Kid's Voting creates the perfect plan for me to impact my students' knowledge of their individual voice in our democratic government. Kids Voting is a red, white and blue opportunity for teachers to develop strong citizens and to become better informed instructors.”

- Brenda Lenna, Teacher
